精神上的奋斗: A Celebration of African American Works on Paper
罗伯特Cozzolino, Senior Curator 和 Curator of Modern Art
在1903 W.E.B. Du Bois published the essay “Of Our 精神上的奋斗” in 黑人的灵魂, 和 argued that to be equal American citizens, African Americans needed to strive to be in the pantheon of artistic culture 和 that “This, 然后, is the end of his striving: to be a co-worker in the kingdom of culture, to escape both death 和 isolation, to husb和 和 use his best powers 和 his latent genius.”
精神上的奋斗 有两个组件: 凯利收集 和 Eldzier Cortor: Theme 和 Variations.
哈蒙的 & Harriet Kelley 集合 of African American Art: Works on Paper
这次展览 was organized by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in association with L和au Traveling 展览, 洛杉矶, CA., 和 was curated by 安娜啊. Marley, Curator of Historical American Art.
The over 70 works on paper in this exhibition span the 20th century 和 represent just a fraction of what is contained in the Harmon 和 Harriet Kelley 集合 in San Antonio, Texas—one of the country's pre-eminent collections of African American art.
Included in the exhibition were drawings, 蚀刻, 石版画, 水彩画, 彩笔, 丙烯画, 水粉画, linoleum 和 color screen prints by such noted artists as Ron Adams, 本尼·安德鲁斯, Romare Bearden, 亚伦道格拉斯, 雅各布·劳伦斯, 查尔斯•白, 伊丽莎白Catlett, 约翰·比格斯, Eldzier Cortor, 和 Margaret Burroughs; Philadelphia area artists Allen Freelon, 雷蒙德·赛斯, 保罗·基恩, 霍勒斯优秀的东西, 亨利Ossawa坦纳, 阿霉素研究, 撒母耳J. Brown; 和 living artists Thornton Dial, 阿利森·萨尔河, 洛弗尔·维特菲尔德, 山姆·米德尔顿, 院长米切尔, 和艾克摩根.
The exhibition provided a rare opportunity for Philadelphians to view master graphics. The majority of works in this exhibition were produced during the 1930s 和 1940s, the era of the Great Depression 和 the Works Progress Administration of the Federal Arts Project. That period gave birth to a school of African American regionalism 和 black consciousness that would not re-surface until the civil rights movement of the 1960s.
Eldzier Cortor: Theme 和 Variations
这次展览, curated by the Senior Curator 和 Curator of Modern Art, 罗伯特Cozzolino, celebrated a generous recent gift to PAFA from Eldzier Cortor (b. 1916). An artist who has had an extraordinary career 和 is still working in his nineties, Cortor grew up in Chicago 和 attended the im体育app下载 of the Art Institute (SAIC) 和 later the Institute of Design or New Bauhaus (ID). In each setting he studied with some of the most influential instructors of the 1930s: Kathleen Blackshear at SAIC 和 Lázló Maholy-Nagy at the ID. In the 1940s Cortor traveled to Jamaica, 古巴, 和海地, fascinated by the richness 和 transformations he found in the African Diaspora. Although a gifted 和 influential painter, Cortor has been a master printmaker from the 1930s onward. The body of work he donated to PAFA (53 objects) consists of prints 和 preparatory materials related to his printmaking process, 和 spans from the 1950s through 2000. The installation revealed Cortor's working methods 和 showed how he has used printmaking as a means to explore motifs that morph, 成为装饰, 扩大, 并将平静.
